A distinct layer of water where cold and warm water meet in a large body of water. The colder part of the water is lacking in oxygen, forcing many fish to rise to the upper layer. Thermoclines can be so dense it can sometimes be picked up by a sonar device, showing up as a thick line on fish finders.
